About the Archives

The Roundtable Newton Archives provide access to a large library of software and information for computers that use Apple's Newton operating system. This site contains all of the files that were formerly available from the Iowa Newton archives (at newton.uiowa.edu). That site has now been shut down (as of Friday, March 20, 1998), but the archives live on at the University of Rochester, where they are now being preserved and occasionally expanded.

The archives are maintained by Michael Tashbook (samurai@cif.rochester.edu). All archive-related questions should be sent to him, or to newton@cif.rochester.edu. Problems with the server itself should be reported to problem@cif.rochester.edu.

This site is hosted by the Computer Interest Floor (CIF), a special-interest housing group for students at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. CIF maintains a Web and FTP server for the University of Rochester community. That server, Roundtable, also hosts this archive -- hence the name.

Important Notes

May 9, 2000

The restoration of the Archives is more or less complete, but we are still in the process of restoring things to their proper places. Please bear with us as we return to normal.

We are always looking for volunteers to aid us in cataloging what we have and locating new files to add to the Archives. If you are interested, please contact us at newton@cif.rochester.edu

For the latest updates, please read the Notes from the Librarian. Right now, the Archives are being maintained by a single (extremely busy) graduate student; as a result, the Archives aren't updated nearly as often as they should be. Fortunately, we expect this situation to improve in the near future.

Despite a series of delays and distractions, the effort to provide a prettier, more user-friendly interface to the Archives is still underway. This effort may take some time to complete, but the new pages will be added one by one as soon as they're ready to go. Stay tuned for further details as they emerge, and we thank you for your patience in the meantime.

In the near future, this page will be modified to offer search capabilities, so that you can locate the exact files that you want. In the meantime, you can search the archives manually, by clicking the link above to access the archives and clicking on the links to view and download the contents of individual directories. Descriptions of most of the files in the archives are available in the readmes subdirectory.

Newton Jolly Roger
This site is flying the Jolly Roger to protest Apple Computer's decision to discontinue development of the Newton platform. The Jolly Roger also signifies our intention to keep the Newton platform alive despite this blow. We encourage you to do the same. For more information on the Jolly Roger campaign, please visit the Newton Underground's Web site at http://www.newton-underground.com/.
