Types of Eruptions

There are a few properties of an eruption that separate it from other eruptions.

Effusive eruptions are characterized by quiet, flowing lava.  They show laminar flow, in which the lava flows in an orderly manner.  The lava flows at the same speed in the same direction.  These eruptions are common with basaltic magmas.
Explosive eruptions are dominated by pyroclastics and more violent displays.  They show turbulent flow, in which the lava flows chaotically.  When the magma is more silicon rich, an explosive eruption is more likely.  Water and magma contact also causes more explosive eruptions.

Conventional eruptions are those in which there are not large quantities of water involved.
Hydrovolcanic eruptions are very aptly named for the fact that they involve water.  They are fairly common, as many volcanoes are located near oceans.  Magma and water react violently, and so hydrovolcanism is a spectacular site to see.
