Guidelines for Submitting Files to the Archives

In order to keep things running smoothly, we ask that individuals submitting files to the archives follow a few basic guidelines, outlined here. Generally, once a file has been submitted, it should appear in the archives within 24-48 hours (although the actual time required may be longer in the case of exceptional circumstances).

  1. Sending files to the Archives

Files should be submitted to the archives in one of two ways:

    1. By E-mail

Contributions can be sent as E-mail attachments, and should be sent to newton@cif.rochester.edu. If you follow this route, please be sure to include a brief description of the file (see below, under "What to Include") in the text portion of your message.

    2. Uploading Files Directly

Files may be uploaded directly to the archives, and should be placed in the incoming/ directory. If you follow this route, please be sure to send E-mail to newton@cif.rochester.edu, notifying us that the file has been uploaded. In this E-mail message, please be sure to include a brief description of the file as well (see below, under "What to Include").

  2. File Formats

Files should be uploaded in either .sit.hqx (BinHexed Stuffit format) or .zip format. We're also looking into making files available in "Newton-ready" .pkg format, for people browsing the archives with their Newtons, but that's a project for the future, once things have settled down a bit.

The tools/submissions/ subdirectory contains Macintosh and PC utilities to assist you in the task of converting your submissions to the proper format. If you require additional assistance, please send us E-mail, and we'll do our best to help you out.

  3. What to Include

    1. The Newton application (.pkg) file itself, along with any and all documentation that you may have for it.

    2. A short description of the file (a few sentences will be fine, and more detail is welcome). For the moment, this will be placed in the readmes/ directory. In the near future, we will use this information to create abstracts for the archive, a la AMUG.
